This project explores the pressure associated with being raised as a woman and how that pressure builds behind the mask girls are taught to wear from a young age. Others can’t see you get mad or upset, otherwise you’re seen as weak, fragile for giving into your emotions and letting them get the best of you. If you don’t show emotion then you’re seen as standoffish and rude, told to smile more, asked why you’re in such a bad mood, how you should be happy that someone is paying attention to you and trying to talk to you. The mask itself isn’t supposed to slip unless you’re alone, where no one can see you give in to that pressure, the standard to be perfect and unique finally building to the point of eruption. I’m looking into the events, roles, and expectations that lead to that pressure building, the eventual release of that pressure, and reintroducing the feminine back into my life.
